Friction welding machine
July 1st 2007

Aviatec has taken delivery of a refurbished Model 50 from Thompson, for friction welding a wide range of components such as reinforcing bars, piston rods, hydraulic cylinders, drill pipes and pump shafts.

The Thompson machine has been equipped with special 2 and 3 jaw chucks and tie-bars so that parts up to 3m in length can be friction welded.

It also features Thompson's computersied system for in-process weld monitoring and control.

Thompson was able to complete the machine within a very tight timeframe, ensuring Aviatec could boost its capacity in order to meet an upturn in its business.

Thompson is enjoying a healthy order book after winning more than £6m worth of new business from customers in Europe, America and the Far East, particularly from manufacturers of drill rods and heavy duty oil pipes.
