Thermocouple and PRT sensors and connectors
January 1st 2006

The Labfacility stand at MTEC will feature thermocouple and PRT sensors, thermocouple connectors, digital temperature and test instrumentation and data loggers.

The company says careful decisions must be made on how to connect the remotely located thermocouple sensor to the host instrumentation to optimise accuracy and minimise cost.

Since a thermocouple produces only a small thermo-electric e.n.f (typically 40µv/°C), great care is needed when terminating the device. Caution is needed to eliminate or minimise spurious thermal EMFs and Ohnic effects which would otherwise result in incorrect readings.

The length of cable used between sensor and instrument is one important consideration. Line resistance has to be taken into account (although the instrument input if effectively potentiometric, the input usually incorporates 'upscale burnout' circuitry). Most instruments can accept a maximum of 100Ohm loop cable resistance without accuracy being compromised.
