Howden Compressors is saving disposal costs and reducing environmental problems by using a mobile centrifugal separator from Alfa Laval to clean and recycle lubricating oil, hydraulic oils and other fluids at its Glasgow plant.

The company opted for an emmie, Alfa Laval’s selfcontained centrifuge, developed for duties such as purifying hydraulic oils.

With a footprint of less than 1m2, the unit can be wheeled into position, connected to a power source and be operational within minutes. The machine has a throughput capacity of 80 to 120L/h, more than sufficient for Howden’s needs.

As well as recycling waste oil, emmie has helped prevent downtime on an horizontal NC boring machine that had suffered a damaged seal, causing lube oil to leak into the coolant tank. Howden ran the mixture through emmie for 48h and recovered both coolant and lube oil such that they could be re-used.
