Installation of a Starlite non-contact measuring system from OGP UK has given Derbyshire-based SRM Mouldings, virtually instant payback. On the morning it was commissioned, SRMs md Mike Spare tested the machines operating parameters with a small batch of rubber O rings. With the 2D profile projector used previously, parts coming off the machine looked fine within dimensional tolerances and free from defects. However, the Starlite told them otherwise. Spare enthuses Immediately, the Starlite machine paid for itself. We have many orders worth a great deal of money and rejects or returns can cost a fortune in terms of replacements and reputation. The equipment highlighted areas where certain cavities were showing signs of wear and tolerances were nearing the pre-defined control limits. Measurement information allowed us to make tool corrections. Previous methods would not have detected these conditions.
