Compact and easy-to-use
September 1st 2007

Combining metalcutting with fabrication has paid dividends at Swift Precision in Pinxton, Nottinghamshire.

The initial investment on the machining side of the business was a 'job shop' package of manual/CNC ProtoTRAK turret mill and manual/CNC ProTURN lathe supplied by XYZ Machine Tools.

Nicolas Smith, MD of Swift Precision was sure the move into precision machining would attract sufficient work to make it a worthwhile diversification.

He says "We just got busier and busier, so much so that it seemed a natural progression to install an XYZ Mini Mill 560 compact vertical machining centre and then two XYZ Mini Mill 450 VMCs." The 13HP, 8000 rev/min Mini Mill 560 was chosen on the basis that its 560 by 400 by 500mm work envelope satisfied virtually all the prismatic machining requirement. Subsequently, two 9HP, 8000 rev/min Mini Mill 450s were chosen.

Their 450 by 310 by 360mm work envelope covers most of that requirement while taking less floor space.

The Mini Mill 450 is of solid cast construction and weighs 2220kg. Its box slides are induction hardened, ground and Turcite-coated to ensure smooth running. It has a 530 by 320mm table, BT40 spindle nose, 10-position tool magazine, auto lubrication and flood coolant.

All three machines have XYZ CNC7 control that allows the control to be configured to match existing skills.
