Modular CNC platform has high degree of scalability March 1st 2008 Anew CNC platform for
machine tool manufacturers
that delivers 'nocompromise'
control system
solutions, is making its debut at
Mach 2008.
Called Flexium, the modular
platform, developed by NUM,
offers a high degree of scalability
that can be applied economically
on a machine with a few axes, or
as many as 200+. This is
combined with open
programmability that gives users
freedom to customise the manmachine
interface and add value.
The platform provides machine
builders with a common platform
for all system building activities,
from standard machines to specialpurpose
equipment such as
transfer machines and integrated
production lines. Underpinning the
platform is the special fidelity and
accuracy of control that is made
possible by NUM's full product line
and proprietary communication
interfaces – from controller to
motor – and its experience in
designing machine tool control
systems and software.
At the heart of the platform is a
new CNC kernel that is at least four
times more powerful than the
fastest version of the company's
Axium controller. Two versions of
the kernel are available to provide
economic solutions for different
sizes of machine: Flexium 6, a
compact solution that is costoptimised
for standalone machines
with up to five axes of motion; and
Flexium 68 which will handle up to
32 interpolated axes, divided into
up to eight coordinated groups.
