Low cost, lightweight energy chain launched
November 1st 2005

Available from igus is a low cost, lightweight version of its multi-axis Energy Chain for robotic applications.

The original, Triflex R 'enclosed', glides around the outer contour of a robot without becoming hooked and jammed. It is available in four sizes and is said to perform even complex, multi-axis handling tasks reliably.

The new modular, lightweight, long-life Energy Chain has been developed for a wide range of different applications. These include tool changers, calibration and automatic image processing equipment, laser, adhesive or handling applications, that often involve inserting large numbers of thin initiator cables.

Users can shorten and lengthen the Energy Chain at virtually any point. David Chapman, managing director at igus, explains "This not only guarantees variability, it means there is no waste whatsoever, which is just one benefit of this extremely light and thus cost-optimised 3D energy supply system."

Triflex R light does not need any additional reinforcements, such as steel ropes.

The trailer design principle guarantees a high degree of tension resistance and works the same as an automotive trailer coupling. Once locked in place, ball and socket form an extremely mobile connection that combines smooth movements in all three axes and optimum flow of force.

Longitudinal axis torsion of up to ±380°/m is possible. Due to the durable inner fastening points, Triflex R light provides a minimum bending radius (radii: 58, 87, 110 and 145mm) that means cables can cope easily with both radial and torsional movements. This, coupled with the smooth, inner contour, results in a significant reduction in cable stress and prolonged cable service life.
