Engis at the cutting edge May 1st 2005 Southampton-based David Richards Engineering, makes ultra-hard cutting tools and uses Engis abrasive wheels on its specialist PCD tool inserts.
The company explains that, as natural diamond is prone to fracture when subjected to impact, DR-PCD tools incorporate Polycrystalline Diamond blanks produced under ultra-high pressure (1 million psi) at a temperature of 1700°C. This results in a material with the hardness of diamond and the toughness of metal. However, it is difficult to grind to a sharp edge.
Engis vitrified bond abrasive wheels grind the blanks to produce the cutting edge. The wheels offer good abrasion resistance and formholding capability, are dressing-free and offer chemical stability with controllable stock removal rate and surface finish characteristics.
