500th robotic waterjet sale
July 1st 2006

KMT Cutting Systems (formerly ABB I-R Waterjet Systems) has announced the sale of the company's 500th robotic waterjet cutting system to Avanzar Interiors / Johnson Controls based at San Antonio in Texas, USA. It will be used for trimming headliners for Toyota Tundra.

The system is the first from KMT to be based on a new design developed by the company the Open Gantry Concept (OGC) and it is the first system from the company to use Motoman robots. Since its purchase by KMT from the ABB Group, KMT Cutting Systems continues to be a worldwide strategic partner with ABB Robotics, but the company can now offer customers the option of using alternative robot brands in the company's robotic waterjet cutting and routing systems.

The OGC is a new system solution from KMT Cutting Systems aimed at trim applications, particularly for interior components of cars and other vehicles such as carpets, headliners, bootliners, insulation mats and dashboards made from soft materials such as polyurethane foam, moulded fibres, sandwich materials or composites.

It is an open system featuring inverted robots mounted on a gantry frame to provide optimum reach for cutting applications. The OGC offers modular solutions for waterjet, routing or other cutting processes.
