Morrison's keeps it cool
May 1st 2006

Two semi-weld Plate Heat Exchangers from Alfa Laval will help maintain the correct temperature at Morrison's 62,500 m2 chill distribution centre.

The new, facility in Burton Latimer, provides chilled storage for fresh produce, meat and fish prior to delivery to individual Morrison's stores in the south Midlands and beyond.

Maintaining the internal temperature of the building at a constant 2°C is the job of two MK15-BWFGR semiwelded plate heat exchangers from Alfa Laval.

The two units handle a total duty of of 1500 kW and are part of a central cooling system that feeds unit coolers to provide direct cooling to the main produce storage area and subsidiary sections for meat and fish.

One option was to go with an off-the-shelf chiller package. This would have been cheaper than the Plate Heat Exchangers in terms of capital installation but over the longer term, the whole life cost - including life of the installation, greater energy efficiency and reduced service and maintenance - would have been much higher.
