Reactor-in-a-box November 1st 2006 Alfa Laval has announced a new development which, it predicts, will revolutionise the way fine chemicals and pharmaceuticals are manufactured. Called ART (Alfa Laval Plate Reactor) it is, essentially, a reactorin- a-box; a heat exchanger that does not merely heat or cool a process but provides the vessel in which key reactions take place. Unlike conventional reactors, ART has been developed to replace conventional stirred batch reactors and enable synthesis and other chemical reactions to take place on a continuous basis. Since the process will be carried out quicker, at higher mixing rates and with shorter dwell times it will slash working inventory by cutting energy consumption and improving process efficiency and safety and achieve higher final product quality.
