Keeps pure water on the move
March 1st 2008

Ongoing, reliable flow measurement as part of a water quality monitoring system, is an important requirement at Glaxo Smith- Kline's manufacturing plant in Harlow, where a significant amount of WFI, 'Ultra Pure water' is used.

To eliminate the potential for purification faults, the water needs to be kept circulating in the ring main pipe work at a constant 85 to 90°C. When laboratories need water, it is fed through a chiller and delivered at a constant 15°C.

Turbine meters installed as part of the monitoring system caused problems as a result of bearing failure.

The solution was provided by non-contact, clamp-on ultrasonic meters supplied by Flowline. The noninvasive Minisonic devices were installed without the need for shutdown, and rigorous testing has shown that the flow meters can handle fluctuating temperature without inducing errors on the measurement.
