Dry steam for dairy
November 1st 2004

Sussex-based High Weald Dairy, has invested in a CFB 4VT steam boiler from Controlled Flame Boilers, to provide high quality, dry steam for its new organic cheese producing plant.

The boiler was specified by the Startech Consultancy for its competitive price, operational efficiencies and technical back-up.

The dairy uses the steam generated from the 4VT boiler to pasteurise milk and to provide the heat required for the cheese making process. It had previously used hot water to heat the milk, but this proved timeconsuming and inefficient.

The chamber of the boiler has a capacity that is said to be about 30% larger than most vertical boilers. This has virtually eliminated the possibility of the boiler priming, thereby avoiding excessive amounts of water being carried over in steam.

Dry steam helps avoid deterioration of both the plant’s pipework and the steam batteries used to convert steam to heat.

The boiler has been designed to increase the correlation between fuel efficiencies and output in order to reduce fuel costs.
