Kluber to smooth things over
February 27th 2008

Prior to contacting Kluber, a chocolate confectionary manufacturer was experiencing major problems with plastic mould carrying chains. These parallel chains are over 1km in length and are designed to articulate the mould around 180 degree bends and through different cooling zones. Differential wear in the chain can result in the moulds skewing and jamming which often results in mould breakage, significant downtime and spoilage of the whole production volume held in the moulding plant at that time.

Independent chain condition analysis was sought in 2005 and, the chain was found to be wearing and predicted not to achieve design life for the application. Chain renewal (exclusive of indirect costs) was quoted at over €100,000.

With the help of the Kluber KLASS technical support service, the chain was removed from service for processing at the Kluber service centre and within 72 hours it was stripped of all deposits and contaminants, degreased, rinsed, dried and re-lubricated with a synthetic food grade oil for maximum initial lubrication benefit.
