Education, education, education
August 20th 2007

One of the major attractions for visitors to the Health and Safety 07 event is the free conference and seminar programme. The educational content is to be delivered by a raft of industry experts including IOSH (Institute of Occupational Safety and Health) members representing the Manchester and North West Districts Branch.

Members of IOSH should note that attending the seminar program offers a opportunity to accrue Continuing Professional Development (CPD) credits. The full programme of speakers is printed below.

The subjects to be covered represent the most vital, current and often misunderstood areas of health and safety. A good example of this is the seminar on Manual Handling delivered by Malcolm Tumbridge, representing IOSH. Repeated on both the first and second day of the event this seminar covers the perennial problems associated with Manual Handling, which continues to be a major cause of absence in the workplace.

Universal areas of concern such as noise management are also discussed on day one by experts such as Peter Wilson and Mike Denton of Aearo Technologies while readers of HSM might be particularly interested in David Thomas’s, seminar on ‘Working at Height’.

Highlights on day two, Thursday 11th October, include a seminar from Paul Difford who will be looking at ‘Industrial Accident Investigation’. Paul’s seminar covers the fact that ‘unsafe acts’ continue to predominate as the significant factors in many accidents; however, employers are often unfamiliar how to properly analyse, classify and remedy the situation.

Other highlights on day two include Elaina Harvey’s seminar on Thermal Protection Against Electric Arc and Flash Fire while PPE continues to be the subject of great debate with Jim Findlay asking the question ‘CE marking, what does it really mean?’ while Ian Samson addresses European legislation.

Two seminars that are particularly topical take place at the beginning of day two. Paul O’Connor’s Fire Presentation identifies the recently implemented fire regulations and their requirements while highlighting key aspects that may require many organisations to implement new or additional measures. Paul will also explore and discuss aspects of suitable fire risk assessment. Immediately afterwards Ron Birchall talks about the hazards of working with asbestos and that despite the fact that legislation has prohibited the use of asbestos for many years, it is estimated that deaths from asbestos illnesses will increase over the next 15 years.

The content of Health and Safety 07 has been designed with the busy person in mind and registering for the event or a seminar is free. However, visitors are advised to do so in advance to guarantee a place. Registration is via: www.healthandsafetyevents.co.uk or for those without internet access registration can be completed by calling the exhibition helpline on: 0870 4866816.
