Build a better machine
June 22nd 2006

Thinking about adopting the Ethernet Powerlink standard for motion-related machine control applications? This feedback on electrical system building - from one of Baldor's first Powerlink customers - might help:

• How much faster was system building compared to your last generation?

"It's probably cut the time by 80%."

• How easy it is to program a new variant?

"Modular software makes changes such as an extra axis of motion extremely easy - for us that could be programmed in a day, as opposed to maybe 2 weeks."

• Is the BOM smaller?

"We've probably saved 60%, which is also reflected in a much smaller electrical cabinet."

Baldor's Ethernet Powerlink compatible range includes:

• Single-axis servo drives, with dual-port Ethernet interfaces to support daisy chaining of drives, plus a CANopen interface for adding remote I/O or other components into the system

•  A real-time motion/machine controller that can control over 200 Ethernet Powerlink devices - up to 16 of which can be interpolated axes. Includes onboard I/O and a USB port, and support for traditional analogue servo axes.
