Top tips for slips March 1st 2008 Speedy Hire has issued a list of
top tips to help reduce the growing
number of accidents and injuries
caused by slips and trips in the
workplace to coincide with a new
awareness campaign by the HSE
called 'Shattered Lives'. According
to the HSE, 1000 workers suffer a
serious injury following a slip, trip
or fall every month. Speedy Hire's
top tips for accident and injury
prevention include:
Make sure floors are kept clean
and dry at all times
When spills occur, notify your
supervisor and restrict access to
areas when cleaning is in progress
Make sure walkways, corridors
and stairways are kept clear.
Power tool cables pose a
particular hazard so use cordless
tools whenever possible
All equipment should be put
away when not in use
Reduce the number of potential
trip hazards – it should be easy
for staff to dispose of waste and
materials quickly and efficiently
Ensure working areas are
adequately lit
Workers should make sure their
view isn't restricted when carrying
or transporting large objects
All staff should wear the correct
footwear appropriate for their
working environment. All anti-slip
footwear should meet BSEN13287
standard and be in good condition
Companies should undertake a
simple workplace risk
assessment to understand why
and how accidents occur
Remember accidents are
everyone's responsibility. Ensure
the issue is well communicated
to staff, contractors and visitors.
