Heat meter shows safe entry
January 1st 2005

A heat meter from Casella CEL enables maintenance staff to enter potentially dangerous areas of Derwent Power Station in Derby earlier than was possible with a previous system.

Until Edison Mission Services bought a Microtherm wet bulb globe temperature index heat stress meter, it had no means of accurately measuring temperatures inside any of the eight high pressure and low pressure boiler drums after they had been taken out of service for maintenance. To ensure safety, nobody was allowed to enter the drums for an extended period of time.

The Microtherm reveals a safe entry level up to a day earlier than the company would have considered previously, reducing outage time and associated costs.
