Get a grip in icy conditions
November 1st 2004

A. Algeo believes it can provide an occupational health and safety product that will change the lives of those who live, work or play in environments that are potentially dangerous due to snow and ice.

Spikys are rubber straps that fit over shoes or boots to prevent slipping. Made from 76% natural rubber and 24% high-grade synthetic rubber they can stretch to 6.5 times their original length, allowing them to accommodate a wide variety of footwear.

There are a number of small perforations in the rubber that help to increase the elasticity of the Spikys. This is said to allow for optimum comfort and to permit the Spikys to be worn all day without pinching or squeezing the foot.

There are no buckles or straps.

Instead, an easy to use heel tab allows the Spikys to be put on or removed quickly and without fuss.

The company says they can be worn while driving and can be neatly folded into a compact, pocket-size Zip-Loc bag.

The actual spikes are made from hardwearing widia steel.

There are two different Spikys to choose from: the version that covers the sole of the shoe, and Spiky Plus that covers the sole and heel for extra safe treading.

Those expected to benefit from Spikys include postal workers, construction workers, early-bird commuters, and so on.
