The storage of oils is regulated under the Control of Pollution (Oil Storage) Regulations 2001 applying to sites storing more than 200 litres of oil.
A recent Oil Care Campaign report found that a common cause of oil pollution incidents was overfilling of the tanks. The guidelines state that the tank must be fitted with an automatic overfill protection device if the filling operation is controlled from a place where it is not practical to observe the tank and any vent pipe.
