More training for safer driving
January 1st 2008

Workplace transport remains the second biggest cause of fatal injury in the workplace, claiming nearly 70 lives each year with, on average, over 6000 people suffering injury – 200 of which are classified as serious. Forklift trucks are implicated in around onequarter of these injuries to employees and typically cause around ten fatalities annually, says Jungheinrich. An important part of Jungheinrich's global materials handling consultancy includes UK driver training.

"There are so many benefits to employing forklift truck drivers who are professionally trained," says Chris Hawkins, Jungheinrich's driver training manager. "For example, turnaround is quicker and smoother, and accidental damage – to both the truck and the product being stored – is reduced. A sympathetically driven machine also enhances truck reliability and, needless to say, improves general safety throughout the facility where the truck is operational." Jungheinrich's fork truck driver training centre in Birmingham offers a range of tuition packages tailored for all kinds of trucks and every level of operator – from novice courses to refresher training. Experienced operators can even be coached up to trainer level. All of the Jungheinrich instructor team work under the direction of a full time Chartered Health & Safety Professional of twenty years experience, certified by the Institute of Occupational Safety & Health (IOSH).

Taking between one and five days – depending on the nature of the course, the training combines a mixture of classroom work, practical demonstrations and exercises.
