Going to waste
March 1st 2007

Lakeland Dairies has improved its waste water treatment plant with the installation of a Centriquip Centrifuge.

The CQ5000 machine has multiplied by 3-fold the amount of solids that can be removed from the plant every day. Lakeland uses two settling tanks to settle sludge as part of its wastewater treatment process.

The new machine draws its feed from the bottom of these tanks and from two sludge-thickening tanks.

It separates the clean water for return to the water treatment plant from the solid matter, which is then used on land as a fertiliser.

Roy Farrell, environmental manager for Lakeland Dairies, says "The new machine can put through 45m3/hr of sludge from the settling tanks, a very pleasing result."
