Sizing matters
July 1st 2008

Industry figures suggest around 80% of pump motors could be the incorrect size, comments Andrew Glover, product manager for WEG Motors. He believes most are overspecified by 10 or 15% by engineers wanting to be 'on the safe side', resulting in a serious loss of energy.

He adds that under-sizing is also relatively common and can result in the motor running hotter, leading to damage through overheating.

Specification of motor size, says Weg, should include starting condition and method of starting as well as running torque.

The company says that including a variable speed drive or soft starter in the specification, matched to the requirements of motor and pump, will provide a solution. VSDs improve energy efficiency in the long term by matching application requirements with correct motor speed, thereby avoiding energy wastage.
