Cut noise & energy
January 1st 2006

A plant modification at a Birmingham-based automotive supplier has reduced noise and reduced energy consumption by 65 per cent. Car mirror maker, Flabeg, buys in flat glass and after numerous production processes, dries the finished product with an air knife - which despite being enclosed was emitting 91DB(A).

Flabeg asked Mitsubishi Electric for a solution. "Their suggestion was to fit an inverter to slow down the fan, which would reduce the noise and had the extra benefit of reducing power consumption," explains Flabeg's Robert Leek.

The inverter chosen was Mitsubishi's new F700, aimed primarily at pump and fan drives - its optimum excitation control provides improved motor efficiency during constant speed operations.

Ease of commissioning and tripless reliability plus predictive maintenance monitor made the unit particularly attractive. Flabeg's three other air knives will now also harness the F700. ROI is expected within 12-14 months.
