Trapping the let off steam
May 1st 2008

Ruabon Works, a chemicals manufacturing site operated by Flexsys Rubber Chemicals, is making steam savings of 12% from its batch reactor following the installation of Gardner Energy Management's GEM Venturi Orifice steam traps.

Following the success of this installation, with payback in five months, the company has installed GEM steam traps on a condensate recovery project and is now retrospectively fitting GEM traps across the site. Instead of utilising a valve mechanism to close off steam for maximum energy and water conservation, the GEM steam traps use the patented venturi orifice design to drain condensate from the steam system. As the steam traps have no moving parts, there is minimal maintenance and no spares, testing or monitoring equipment are necessary.

GEM has recently been acquired by Thermal Energy International.

GEM founder Tim Gardner will remain with the company for one year to assist with integration.
