Saving energy
July 1st 2005

Spirax Sarco engineered systems have helped cut utility consumption by 20% at GlaxoSmithKline’s Barnard Castle factory.

Five such systems provide lowtemperature hot water at 80°C to feed production processes. Six further systems provide domestic hot water at 60°C. Capacities range from 135 to 1150kW.

The compact systems save energy by heating only the amount of water demanded by the process. A further advantage over the previous shell-and-tube heat exchangers is that the compact plate heat exchangers in the new system are not classed as pressure vessels and do not need insurance inspections. The risk of Legionella that can arise when hot water is stored is also eliminated.
