Locking up savings May 1st 2006 Head of Estates, David Halley, had already addressed the problems of lights being left on for the majority of the day within the accommodation wings and corridors at HMP Wymott by engaging Setsquare to supply, install, test and commission microwave sensors and daylight photocell controls. So it was logical to seek further advice from Setsquare to overcome the problem areas highlighted by the Prison Governor.
There were five main areas of concern. Within the Sports Hall and the Weights Room, new high bay high frequency fluorescent light fittings, containing 4x 55w PL tubes were installed complete with mirror reflectors. These were linked into long-range microwave occupancy controls. The Vehicle Compound had an immediate lighting upgrade using high frequency 1500mm twin tube fittings was introduced and produced immediate savings.
During daylight hours all lighting in the main area is now switched off by daylight linking. During out-ofhours periods (night-time) lighting only comes on when the occupancy sensors detect someone entering the area.
"While lighting was a concern for us when areas were continuously illuminated, the problem areas have been reduced to a manageable level since we introduced a programme of installing controls," said Halley.
