School slashes energy costs
May 1st 2007

Lighting controls introduced at Mascalls School in Paddock Wood, Kent, have helped cut energy costs and reduced the school's carbon footprint.

In March 2006 Kent County Council engaged with a number of schools to encourage them to take up an Energy Loan Fund provided by Kent County Council and Salix Finance that allows schools to borrow money to invest in energy measures that reduce carbon automatic lighting controls. It is also considering a wind turbine.

Electricity savings have been achieved by the installation of lighting control systems from Setsquare's Liteminder and InfraPOD ranges. Controls are installed into the wiring of existing lighting circuits and sensors positioned to detect occupancy. In addition, photocells are installed in areas where there are high levels of natural daylight, switching off lights when this exceeds a pre-set level.

The amount of lighting on automatic control is 47.9kW.

For normal school hours, estimated running costs are £9920 per year. However with more than 40% saving in energy through the lighting controls, this is reduced to £5950, a saving of £3970 in running costs and a reduction of 23 300kg of CO2 per year
