Household heat made greener and cheaper
May 1st 2008 Ireland's first major District
Heating (DH) system is a new
housing development in
Dundalk with input from Alfa Laval.
The development, Carlin Hall, has
a target of 90% lower emissions,
30% more energy efficiency and
30% lower energy costs.
It is part of the Dundalk
Sustainable Energy Zone project; a
4km2 area of housing, schools,
hospitals and businesses. Carlin
Hall's housing is being built by
Keelagh Group with a DH system
designed by Bio Energy Power
Systems. Households receive heat
and hot tap water via 4000m of
pre-insulated steel pipe-work
connected to a central biomass
boiler burning wood chippings and
natural gas. Energy consumed is
measured by a Cetetherm Mini
sub-station with a heat meter. It
incorporates two Alfa Laval Brazed
Heat Exchangers, one to heat
water for the radiators and the
other to heat up water for the
domestic hot water supply.
Cetetherm sub-stations isolate
each dwelling from the main
supply so single malfunctions do
not close down the entire DH
