Innovation in oil-free air
January 1st 2004

Atlas Copco has introduced the new AQ range of water- injected screw compressors. The new AQ compressor concept combines the benefits of pure oil-free air, a high-pressure capability, and improved energy efficiency the result of extremely effective water cooling of the unit. No oil is present within the new technology compressor element even the bearings are water lubricated.

At the heart of the new AQ compressor is a new water-injected screw element that produces near-isothermal compression and contributes to a compression energy efficiency increase of some 20% over more traditional methods. The compression element features the new technology of optimised-profile polymer ceramic rotors supported by water-lubricated hydrodynamic and hydro-static bearings.

This total absence of oil or grease in the AQs compression element absolutely guarantees the delivery of pure oil-free air. Whats more, the design of the AQ compressors eliminates the need for oil cooling and oil-related components. So there are no oil separators, no oil stop valves, no oil filters and no check valves.

Only materials of the highest quality are used throughout the compressor assembly: the element casing is made from aluminium bronze - the material used by shipbuilders to manufacture propellers and anchors, the water storage vessel is fabricated from stainless steel, and other corrosion-resistant materials are used throughout the AQ design.

Atlas Copcos revolutionary AQ compressor series provides the user with a great deal of choice. Available in 30, 37, 45, 55kW fixed speed and 55kW VSD variants, with three pressure ratings of 7.5, 10 and 13 bar, this range offers a high degree of flexibility - a choice of units that allows operators with high-pressure applications the opportunity to benefit from delivery of pure, oil-free air without compromise or risk to production equipment or end-product quality.

The concept of integration of ancillary features within the compressor footprint, to create a compact and compatible package, is further in evidence. The new AQ range is classified as a Workplace Air System due to its quiet operation. The proven IFD range of refrigeration air dryers, included within the compressor envelope, ensures that the desired quality of compressed air can be met at all times.

The new AQ is a truly global compressor product. Both 50 and 60hz models are available in voltage combinations to satisfy the needs of worldwide markets.

For operation within the more hostile climatic environments, a full range of high ambient temperature rated units are available on all fixed speed models at 7.5, 10 and 13 bar operational pressures.
