BERR has stated that the future of UK manufacturing will include a lot of green collar jobs in developing the move towards a low carbon economy. Gordon Brown said at the Labour Party conference that "I want British companies and British workers to seize the opportunity and lead the world in the transformation to a low carbon economy". Yet John Hutton said at the same conference that "No coal plus no nuclear equals no lights. No power. No future".

So you want the country to be low carbon while building new coal fired power stations? There is no commercial scale carbon capture and storage at present so the Government has yet again committed with grand rhetoric to the future while doing the opposite now. Last month's IP&E poll had over 70% of respondents agreeing that energy supply, no matter how it is produced, is more important that the green agenda. This is fine if security of supply is what worries you most. But you cannot have both at the same time with coal.
